Poisonous and Irritating Plants of Florida

Below is a circular published by the state of Florida in 1978. I think it is no longer in print though I have a hard copy. It is reproduced below. Visual quality varied on the original typewritten copy. There is no intent to violate copyright but just to provide information written before the Internet to the Internet. I have moved the index to the front rather than leaving it at the end. The index is by number not page. There is also a four page addendum at the end which was not indexed in the original so if you don’t find your plant in the index, check there.

yes but… their version is missing some pages, and if I remember correctly some were out of order. A poor copying job. While I did drop the bibilography I do have all the pages that were indexed and they are in order.

I will be the first to admit that I hate details. But one of the reasons why I put this on my site was the official version is missing pages and out of order. I might add the view of the publication is quite conservative. You can find common edibles listed as toxic.

Hey Deane I know very well about the dangers of rosary pea, but I wanted to pick your brain about the fantastic bead work of the seminoles and cherokees, everything on the internet treats these beads and jewelry like it was the black plague.I know the natives wore thousands of beads every day and most were made from rosary pea, my question is how did they get rid of the toxins? no one will say on the internet and I know natives wouldnt kill themselves for some beads.you know of any way to remove the toxins? Thanks

The toxin can be removed but it destroys the color of the seed. Natives today make jewelry out of the seeds as they are. The Rosary Pea is the most toxic seed on earth. As little as fifteen hundred thousandths of your body weight can kill you. The toxin is also active for five years. To make jewelry out of it is irresponsible in that by drilling access to the poison is guaranteed if a seed is swallowed.
