Solanum americanum: Food or Poison?

Anyone who’s done some foraging has seen the “Black Nightshade”  also called the “Common Nightshade” and (DRUM ROLLLLLLLLL) the “Deadly Nightshade.” It’s one to four feet tall, oval to diamond shaped leaves, with and without large blunt teeth, little white star-like flowers with yellow cores followed by green berries that turn shiny black, larger than a BB, smaller than a pea. Some foraging books will tell you it is very edible and the dangers overrated; some will say it will kill you, don’t eat it. I land on the edible side and I eat it.

But, to cover myself legally because there are a lot of fools with lawyers, I am not suggesting you eat any part of any wild nightshade.  In fact, let me include what soon-to-be PhD and author Delena Tull writes in her book Edible and Useful Plants of Texas and the Southwest.

The toxicity of the species is quite variable in different varieties and in different parts of the world. Euell Gibbons reports using the ripe berries in pies and numerous other references indicate that the ripe cooked fruit may be safe. Personally, I consider the whole plant potentially deadly and leave it alone. “

Delena’s book is well done and well-considered so her comment carries weight, though I was surprise to see her take that view. What that means is do not experiment on your own. Find a local person who knows if your “Black Nightshade” is edible and how.  Now for some extensive history, paraphrased as much as possible:

Solanum nigrum (soLAYnum KNEEgrum, the Black Nightshade) is found in the Old World, Africa to India and beyond. Its leaves are used as a green, boiled twice or more like pokeweed.  In Kenya four varieties of it grow and three are highly sought after. It is the prime potherb. The fourth variety is considered too bitter to eat. Of 61 greens tested in Africa, S. nigrum had the highest amount of vitamin A. In the region of India the plant has many names and is firmly in the human food chain and very popular. It is also in medical use.  Modern Greeks call it “Styfno. They boil the leaves then use them as the basis for a salad.

Now, back to North America.

When Europeans arrived they saw the native nightshades.  Because they resembled the Black Nightshades in the Old World they were considered variations of the Old World nightshades and were called … Black Nightshades … all of them.  But as time passed botanists had different opinions and the names were changed, or worse combined, such as Solanum nigrum var. americanum. Every botanist with an opinion called these plants what he thought they should be called.  What was once thought of as varieties of one native in North American ( S. nigrum) became many plants with many names. Then even more careful botanists got rid of some of the names and said they weren’t Black Nighshades at all and were not Old World variations.  In fact, some think the S. americanum (ah-mare-ree-KAY-num) isn’t even a native but is from Australia. On top of that, the Old World plant, the original Black Nightshade, became naturalized in North America as well.  So it became quite a muddy soup. Then there were reports of toxicity, which makes some sense if you were calling non-Black Nightshades Black Nightshades, essentially inducting non-edibles into the edible group.  To say it is a foggy, foraging family is an understatement. Even the pro’s profess confusion though I think they caused it. Native peoples had it sorted out well long before there were botanists.

There is no doubt Solanum family has toxic members. And the green berries of the plants mentioned here are toxic. They have killed a few children and at least one adult within record keeping. Livestock eating the plants/green berries in the field or dried in hay have been poisoned and or died. Yet, around the world for centuries many of the Black Nightshades are listed as edible if not highly esteemed. For the last quarter of a century, in particular, botanists have been writing about their names and toxicity when ripe and/or prepared correctly. Some still say yes, some still say no. Let’s look at our main three:

1) A native first called S. nigrum then S. nigrum var. americanum is now called Solanum americanum; 2) a variation of that S. americanum is called Solanum ptycanthum, (p-tic-ANTH-um) and 3) the Old World one is called Solanum nigrum. While they can all be found in most regions of the United States, the S. americanum favors the South, the S. nigrum the mid-west and the S. ptycanthum the north. However, the S. ptycanthum is the most wildly dispersed and reported in most areas. It also comes with less pedigree and is not reported in California.

199Some think S. ptycanthum is a North American native, some think it is a cross between the S. americanum and the S. nigrum. One author says the mature fruits might be edible. One serious scientific report says they fed ripe S. ptycanthum berries to rats for 13 weeks with no detectable problems. A third says the Indians, like the Cherokee and the Catabwa, ate the leaves of the S. ptycanthum and held them in high esteem. The latter appeals to me but if the S. ptycanthum is a hybrid with the old world S. nigrum and not a native, how long was it around for the Indians to discover it, use it, and hold it in high esteem?  Or do they think it is a hybrid from tens of thousands of years ago, just as they think the S. americanum originated in Australia? When details like that are left out one sometimes wonders how comprehensive some “botanists” are.

Since these three plants look very much alike what are the main features to sort them out (though the plants are highly variable)?

1) The S. americanum has green berries flecked with white. On ripening they turn SHINY black. They also grow in an umbel cluster, that is, the stems of the berries all go back to generally ONE central point.  The sepals do not adhere to the fruit. Berries have 40 to 110 seeds. The stem is NOT very hairy. The seedlings do not have maroon under their leaves.

2) The S. ptycanthum looks the S. americanum except it has maroon coloring on the bottom of younger leaves, particularly sprouts. The berry contains 50 to 100 seeds. No doubt it is often confused as an adult with the S. americanum. This would suggest growing some of what you think are either S. americanum or S. ptycanthum and looking at the underside of the young plants. Some say the adult plant has some red under its leaves.

3) The S. nigrum has DULL black berries when ripe, and they tend to be larger than the other two. Also the stems of the berries do not emerge from one single point but are separated slightly on the stem, staggered like a spike. It tends to have 25 to 30 seeds, 1.8 to 2.2 mm long, but they can range from 15 to 60.

Though ubiquitous and plentiful I avoided the “Black Nightshade” for years because of their reported toxicity even when ripe. Then I learned of a local grocery store manager from Cuba who ate the ripe berries whenever he found them. With a living local guinea pig alive I had to give them a try.  My plant de trepidation was the S. americanum and I was careful, starting with a quarter of one berry at a time, then the next day half a berry et cetera, working my way up. They’re quite tasty.  I have not eaten a cup of them at a time or baked a pie like Euell Gibbons, but as a trail side nibble the ripe berries have proven quite edible, though the flavor varies from musty to sweet. They look black but are actually intensely purple, and probably full of anti-oxidants.

While I have not personally proven this to myself regarding all three species mentioned here — the S. nigrum is not that common  locally — some researchers say the stems and leaves of both the S. americanum and S. nigrum are edible after being boiled. And for reasons I will get to, I will add they should be boiled twice, at least 15 minutes each time.  These experts also say the berries of each are edible when totally ripe, either raw and cooked. As for the S. ptycanthum, the cooked leaves were eaten by Nnative Americans and, as mentioned earlier, in one experiment the ripe berries fed to rats for three months caused them no harm.

The young leaves of S. americanum — which you should boil at least once, maybe twice before the plant blossoms — are on par with the nutrition in Amaranth leaves but with less vitamins A and C. Per 100 grams edible young leaves contain: 190 calories, 4.7 grams of protein, half a gram of fat, 8 grams of carbohydrates. Other nutrients are calcium 210 mg, iron 6.1 mg, beta-carotene 1.9 mg, vitamin B1 0.14 mg, and vitamin C 40 mg. In the book Plant Resources of Southeast Asia they report the content of boiled leaves and young green fruit: 140 calories in 100 grams, protein 1.9 grams, fat 0.1 grams, carbohydrates 7.4 grams, calcium 274 mg, iron 4.0 mg, beta carotene 0.5 mg, vitamin B1(thiamin) 0.10 mg, and vitamin C 17 mg. 

While the  nutritional value of leaves have been reasonably researched data on berries of the American Black Nightshade is elusive. A large study of the family in Africa where S. americanum is consumed just happened to leave that species out. However, a commonly eaten relative, S. torvum, has this line-up for 100 grams of fresh fruit: 160 calories, protein 2 grams, fat 0.1 grams, carbohydrates 7.9 grams, calcium 50 mg, phosphorus 30 mg, iron 2 mg, vitamin A 750 IUs, vitamin B1 (thiamin) 0.08 mg, and vitamin C 80 mg.

Now, why boil the leaves twice? Three reasons. The first one came from a veterinarian report on the S. nigrum saying the toxicity varies plant to plant and season to season (though I think they were lumping them all collectively as Black Nightshade.)  As an example they cite the potato which produces toxic green skin potatoes sometimes depending upon the growing conditions. So while boiling once may work this year, it might not work next year. Next, in Africa they boil the leaves of the S. nigrum twice. How long they boil them is not reported. It was called “a while.”  Thirdly, I had a close friend boil until tender the leaves of the S. americanum. He did not boil them a second time because he thought he had the leaves of a totally different plant. He ended up with a headache. That says to me boiling once is not enough even if it is. The older the leaves get the more bitter and toxic they are, so foragers should collect younger leaves and tops and not eat it to excess. Let’s take a closer look at the plants.

Ripe S. americanum berries, edible

The Solanum americanum has alternating leaves that are hairy underneath, particularly at the edges. They are not reddish-purple underneath when young. They can be oval to triangular, no teeth or irregularly teethed. Flowers, five petals, white, have small anthers. The berries are speckled with white until fully ripe whereupon they turn black and shiny — shiny, that’s important. The berries are usually in a cluster, on several short stems originating from one point or nearly one point — one point, that’s important. The sepals do not adhere to the fruit.  It tends to have 40 to 110 seeds or more, 1 to 1.5 mm long. Here in Florida it fruits nearly all year long.

Professor Julia Morton, in her book, Wild Plants for Survival in South Florida,  says fully ripe berries of the S. americanum are edible raw or cooked. Young leaves and stems are edible cooked. The Mansfeld’s Encyclopedia of Agricultural and Horticultural Crops also says the cooked leaves and ripe fruit are edible.  Sam Thayer in his latest book, Nature’s Garden, also argues they are edible.  The leaves contain about 6990 mg of beta carotene per 100g.

The Solanum nigrum, one to three feet high, has dull black fruit — dull that’s important — and the fruit is larger than S. americanum. It can have up to 60 seeds though 15 to 35 is common. Unripe fruit can be light green to almost white.  The flower has large anthers, the sepals generally adhere to the fruit, and they are racemiform, that is, not all originating from one point but along the stem (peduncle) — that’s important. Its ripe fruit is edible as are its cooked leaves, according to Edward Schelling and Qi-sheng Ma, Department of Botany, University of Tennessee, as reported on page 223, Vol. 46, Economic Botany, 1992. The Canadian government also reports the berries are edible. Mansfeld’s Encyclopedia of Agricultural and Horticultural Crops reports the cooked leaves and ripe berries are edible.

So that’s fairly clear. Then along comes Solanum ptycanthum. The S. ptycanthum is very similar to the S. americanum but it is mostly hairless and may have leaves with purple undersides, particularly when young. Purplish undersides is important to identifying the young plant.  It is also called the Eastern Black Nightshade and the West Indian Nightshade.

The S. ptycanthum is an annual or short-lived perennial that will grow to a yard or so but usually is shorter. It tends to be well- branched in the upper parts and the stems are usually nearly hairless and smooth. Mature leaves alternate, they are pale green, soft, thin, almost translucent, oval to oval-lance shaped. Flowers are small, usually two to five grouped together in a small umbel-like arrangement (from one point) on a short stalk (peduncle) sticking out from the side of the stem rather than from the axil (where the leaf meets the stem.)  The flower is star-shaped, white or white tinged with purple with a yellow star, often streaked with purple when growing in cold temperatures. Looks like a potato flower but much smaller. The plant flowers from June until late autumn in northern climes. Fruits green at first but turning black, shiny and juicy when mature, 50 to 110 small flat seeds and 4 to 8 small, hard, irregular stone-like crumbs. Mature fruits of detach at the junction of the pedicel and peduncle (where the stem of the berry meets the stem it was growing on.) I’ve read no reports of the S. americanum having stone-like crumbs, which if true would be one more difference between the S. americanum and the S. ptycanthum.

For the record the leaves and young shoots of Solanum villosum (vee-LOW-some) are used as a leafy vegetable. Its berries are light green or yellow when ripe and the leaves are so hairy that they may feel sticky. Its berries are not edible as far as I know. The leaves of the S. guineense (gin-ee-EN-see) are also edible. And adding to the confusion is the Solanum retroflexum, fomerly Solanum burbankii. Its cooked leaves and ripe fruit are edible. As its old scientific name indicates, it is of hybrid origin. The plant was reportedly bred by Luther Burbank in the early 1900s and is a hybrid of S. villosum and S. guineense, though that may be in dispute. S. retroflexum is compact, typically growing to a height of one to two feet and can fruit when only four-inches tall. The fruit is dark blue-purple when ripe. Green (unripe) fruits are toxic.

Generally said a Black Nightshade plant can produce up to 178,000 seeds per plant. There are about 2,000 seeds to a gram. The plant can be propagated by stem cuttings. Under cultivation leaves and stem tops are regularly harvested.  The composition of 100 g edible portion of “African” nightshade leaves (I presume S. nigrum) is water 87.8 g, 39 calories, protein 3.2 g, fat 1g, carbs 6.4 g, fiber 2.2 g, calcium 200 mg, potassium 54 mg, iron 0.3 mg,  beta carotene 3.7 mg, ascorbic acid 24 mg. The dry matter content varies from 6–18 % depending on plant age, soil moisture and fertilizing. The protein is rich in methionine.

Solanum means “quieting” because some members of the family induce sleep. Americanum means of America, nigrum means black, and ptychanthum is from two Greek words meaning “folded flower.”  Villosum is hairy and retroflexum means bent backwards. Like the S. nigrum, the S. retroflexum has sepals that turn back away from the berry. Burbankii for Luther Burbank and guineense means from Guinea.

IDENTIFICATION:

S. americanum: Green berries speckled with white, fruit in a cluster radiating from one point. Shiny black.

S. ptycanthum: Similar to americanum but young leaves and shoots maroon under leaf, fruit has seeds and crumbs.

S. nigrum: Dull black berries, arranged along the stem.

TIME OF YEAR: Summer in northern climes, year round in warmer areas.

ENVIRONMENT:  Will tolerated sand and dry conditions but prefers well cultivated and rich soil. If it makes a tomato happy it will make a black nightshade happy.

METHOD OF PREPARATION: Ripe berries raw or cooked, young leaves, stem tops boiled twice, 15 minutes each time.

Edible or poisonous or both? The American Nightshade (Solanum americanum) remains controversial. Usually you find a plant here or there, but sometime you will find a large clump of them producing thousands of ripe berries which is why Euell gibbon wrote that he made pies out of them. 

The plant perhaps represent how botanists can fail the science. Presumptions, poor description and ignorant naming put this species into a centruies-long fog of what is it and is it edible. Meanwhile foragers kept on consuming it, a classic example of how the academic tower can ignore the lower landscape.

Regardless of the name du jour, I have for years linked certain physical characteristics to a certain plant and have eaten the ripe berries without issue.  For decades I ignored the plant then through a friend I met a Cuban refugee who ate them regularly. What is now called Solanum americanum is also referred to as the American Black nightshade complex.

Here’s what I look for:  shiny green berried (toxic), mottled and flecked with white dots. Usually they are all clustered at the end of a small stem called a peduncle, Occasionally one berry  will not be in the cluster. Green Berries are toxic. They ripen into dark purple berries. The small white blossom, will occasionally have  white petals that bend downward, most blossom will have petals that turn upward.

I personally have not eaten the cooked leaves but I have a friend who did. Without consultation he misidentified the American nightshade as an amaranth and steamed the leaves instead of boiling them. Everyone in the family who ate the steamed leaves got bad headaches but other wise were fine. One infers that  boiling removes something we don’t want whereas steaming does not. In poorer countries the cooked leaves are eaten before the plant blossoms. If they are still bitter after boiling once, they are boiled a second time like poke weed.

White jelly fungus (Tremella fuciformis) is easy to spot and is available all year. One usually finds it on the bark of dead hardwood, Those detail are important as there is (Ductifera pululahuana) somewhat of a look alike which as far as I know is not edible that grows on the ground on barkless decomposing wood. It is not poisonous but does not reach the quality of being eaten. Jelly fungus (Tremella fuciformis) does not have much flavor which is why it is often dried then rehydrated with a flavorful liquid of choice. Also if you put it in a meal with a lot of other white items it can disappear.

One thing I learned from past hurricanes is to have ample water stored for the days when the electricity disappears. When Francis blew through in 2004 I had a 25,000 gallon pool. When Irma came I had some 50 gallons set aside i na barrel. During Ian I was ready but only lost electricity thus water delivery for only eight hours. There is a stream half-a-mile down the house, and it rose 25 feet after Ian but using that would require carrying, sterilizing and filtering. So with a thin storm front approaching Wednesday evening I made my second water catchment system (an 8-foot by 6-foot tarp, four poles, plastic ties, a weight (rock)

and a bucket. In the morning the bucket was full of clear water, which I filtered through a large coffee filter into a 5-gallon wine carboy. Interestingly the rain water tasted like spring water. (The land I grew up on had five springs, two of which were turned into wells.) The rain water had tiny bits of leaves in it, I added a little bleach and I think I am good to go. As rain usually accompanies storms that blow down powerlines, this seem like a good temporary system for such occasions. 

If you look across local lakes now you will see ruby red splotches on the horizon. Those are maples putting on new leaves. Are maple leaves edible? Yes and seeds, too. Are they prime foraging food? Opinions vary. The delicate samaras (seebelow  right) happens to be red but they can also be green. Later the auto-rotating wings will turn brown. Locally the trees are so heavy with seeds they appear red from a distance. As for eating them what you need to do is taste them first. If they are not bitter you can tear off the wings and eat them raw though some folks eat the soft wings, too. If they are bitter they need to be cooked in boiling water, cooled, then tasted. They should be less bitter.

You may have to boil them again. Non-bitter seeds can also be roasted or sun-dried. Some Native Americans sprouted the seeds for a treat. I do not know of any toxic maple seeds to humans but red maple (Acer rubrum) leaves and seeds are toxic to horses. That said I do recall we had two red maple intentionally planted in the barnyard. My father liked the looks of them. Our horses — definitely leaf eaters — left them alone. To read more about maples go here.

West Indian Chickweed can indeed look like snow.

Drymaria cordata… Drymary… West Indian Chickweed… White Snow. Hopefully you can see in the accompanying picture why this species is called White Snow. When it is seeding and the sun hits the seed heads just right it can resemble a patch of white snow on your lawn. Unlike true chickweed, which is Stellaria media, Drymary is here most of the year but has similar uses to true chickweed (which you can also find right now.) Young leaves and shoots are edible, older leaves have some medicinal uses including use as a diuretic. There is some research that suggests it can reduce coughing and can easy anxiety. Jabuticaba fruit grows on the trunk and limbs of the tree.

In its native Brazil the Jabuticaba is by far the most popular fruit. The Dutch knew about it in 1658. Jabuticaba made it to California by 1904. It’s a common ornamental and there are many cultivars” Sabara, Paulista, Rajada, Branca, Ponhema, Rujada, Roxa, Sao Paulo, Coroa, Murta, and Mineira. Per 100 grams Plinia cauliflora fruit has 45.7 calories, 0.11 grams of protein, 0.08 grams of fiber, 0.01 grams of fat and 12.58 gams of carbohydrates. Vitamin A is absent but it has 22.7 mg of vitamin C which is about a third of your daily need. The B vitamins are B1 (thiamin) 0.02 mg, B2 (riboflavin) 0;02 mg, and B3 (niacin) 0.21 mg. Two minerals are reported: Calcium 6.3 mg and phosphorus 9.2 mg. It is also called Myrciaria cauliflora.

It’s a short tree planted in warm areas of North American and a common ornamental in Florida and the Gulf Coast. One is reported to sustain an 18F freeze and continued to thrive and fruit. Jabuticaba means “like turtle fat” referring to the fruit pulp, or, it means “tortoise place.” Take your pick.  Myrciaria is from the Greek myrike (μυρίκη) which was the  Greek name for the “tamarisk” a tree that is aromatic. In English it means Myrtle. Cauliflora means cauliflower-like. Plinia is Dead Latin for filled, full, rich, whole, perfect, well-equipped. You might remember from history Pliny the Elder and Younger.

There are Plantains that look like tough bananas and there are Plantains that are low and leafy plants. They are not related. Just two different groups with the same common name. Low-growing Plantains can be native or non-native. The one pictured above is native, the Dwarf Plantain. As a genus the plants are well-known. The leaves are edible raw when young. As they age they become more bitter and stringy. Cooking makes them palatable up to a point. Then they move into the astringent medical realm. As such they are used on bites, stings and to help puncture wounds heal. The seeds are edible once produced and are the source of the commercial dietary fiber, psyllium. When finely ground and flavored the seeds are sold under the brand name Metamucil. There are numerous species of Plantagos (Plantains) with at least four common locally, P. virginiana, P. major, P. lanceolata and P. rugelii the latter which strongly resembles P. major. They are all used the same way. (P. rugelii is pink at the base of the stem.)

One problem beginning foragers have is confusing young Oakleaf Fleabane leaves for Dwarf Plantain leaves (they are both rosette-ish, low-growing green leaves, hairy with fibrous threads in the stem.) But the Dwarf Plantain is essentially a long skinny hairy leaf with a few teeth. The Oakleaf Fleabane is much fatter, has lobes, and does resemble oak leaves found on more northern species. Of course when they blossom their difference is quite obsvious. Generally considered not edible I know a few people who have tried in once mistaking it for a Plantago. One wouldn’t think that living in a small rental house or apartment interferes with foraging but it can. The size of the kitchen can restrain the size of the oven which can limit the size of pots and pans one can use. Thus my loaf is round. The yeast and bacteria for this sourdough came from Juniper Berries which are really cones. Some were collected in West Palm Beach, others near Daytona Beach. Sourdough bread depends on wild yeast and lacto-bacteria. They are in all flour but different species. In theory one feeds the “starter” and the favorable yeast and bacteria outcompete unfavorable yeasts and bacteria becoming dominant.

Sourdough takes longer to make than regular bread because the yeast has not been bred to make a lot of rising gas quickly. The same issue comes up when the question is can one use bread yeast to make wine. Yes but… Bread yeast is bred to make a lot of gas and very little alcohol whereas wine yeast is bred to make alcohol and not a lot of gas. Wild yeast, like wild vinegar bacteria, can also throw a variety of flavors. Soudough is sour in the same way pickles, yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi and kombucha are tart from lactic acid. It takes longer to develop the flavor of sourdough and it works well in cooler temperatures whereas bread yeast likes to be kept warm. The wild yeast can also tolerate the higher acid environment created by the bacteria. Why make sourdough? The bacteria reduces the carb load, alters the gluten, increases B vitamin use, and reduces phytates by some 70%. Phytates are the largest group of anti-nutrients in regular bread. Thus compare to regular bread sourdough allows more mineral absorption from the bread. It also increases prebiotic and probiotic-like properties. I took a couple of tablespoons of old blue Juniper “berries” and put them in non-chlorinated sugar water for a day then used that water when making my starter. (If you let tap water sit for a day it loses its chlorine.)

The Foresteria experiment continues. We are halfway through the brining period (basically to reduce the bitter tannins in the fruit.) I know consuming a couple of berries off the tree does not cause acute toxicity (meaning immediate) but I have no idea about possible long term effects. I have eyed Foresteria berries for years knowing they are in the Olive family. One species, F. neomexicana, New Mexico Privit, Desert Olive, was eaten as were the fruit of F. pubescens. They are all bitter which is why curing them like olives occurred to me. They are soaking in a 10% brine solution with the solution being changed every week for a month. As with any brining the fruit are kept covered by the solution by a glass plug which conveniently fits into a used Dunkin Donut ice coffee cup.

If Longfellow had lived elsewhere — say Europe — he might have penned in his famous poem: “Under the shedding Sycamore tree the village smithy stands.” As it was Longfellow wrote about the mighty American chestnut which sadly because of a blight is nearly no more. And while mentioning Longfellow take a look at his picture on the left. Most of the photos of him show an old bearded man. This was taken when he was much younger, in 1855, when photography was young, too. And unlike other pictures from the time he’s not posing like a stature. It’s more natural and gives us a glimpse of the man and personality. There’s a bit of destiny in Longfellow’s eyes. Maybe he sensed photographs would replace paintings and he wanted to look across time at us, or, us him. What did he do right after the photo was taken? Go out to dinner because he was already dressed up? Or tell the photographer he’s pay him for the (then) expensive photo next week when one of his new poems sold? When I see old photos like this I wonder what the next moment was like, when they broke pose and went on with living. Photos are frozen slivers of time.

Sycamores drop a lot of leaves.

Unlike Longfellow’s chestnut tree the Sycamore gets a bad rap because of what you see in the picture right, leaves…. lots of large leaves in (my) yard. To me it’s attractive fall colors and in time more stuff for the compost pile. But, it’s the bane of many homeowners who want carefree landscaping. Sycamores, however, are forager friendly. The sap is drinkable and one could make a syrup out of it if one wanted to spend the time and energy. The sap tastes like slightly sweet water, and it is already filtered by the tree so also quite safe to drink. If you boil it down like maple sap it tastes like butterscotch.  The wood is inert so it can be used in a variety of ways with food or cooking, from skewers over the campfire to primitive forks et cetera.  To read more about the maligned Sycamore go here.

Foraging Classes: Last Saturday in Gainesville we dug up five winged yam roots. Sunday in Melbourne we found some groundnuts and enjoyed some sumac berries This weekend both classes are near the west coast, Port Charlotte Saturday, Sarasota Sunday.  Maybe the bitter cold won’t get that far south.

I had a friend who thought of himself as an outdoorsman thus beyond needing to study edible plants. Many years ago he called me one day asking “how do I get the seeds out of the pigweed berries.”  I knew there was a problem immediately. Our local “pigweed” does not have berries but our local nightshade does. Our “pigweed” is an Amaranth and has seed spikes. About the size of fingers or more they are covered with tiny flowers that produce a multitude eye-of-the needle seeds, tan to black.  No berries involved at all. Conversely the nightshade produces a cluster of black shiny berries on one small stalk (photo to right.) It does have a lot of seeds inside the berries. So I thought I had better ask him why he wanted the seeds before I told him him the Amaranth didn’t have berries but the nightshade did. He wanted to grow some in his yard. They had been steaming the leaves and eating them like spinach! When I got done explaining he said “then that’s why we’ve all been getting headaches after eating the leaves.” Indeed. The leaves of this particular nightshade are edible but they must be boiled in one or two changes of water, not steamed.

The plant to left is toxic and has several botanical names though a common on describes it well, Golden Dewdrop. Botanically it is Duranta repens, D. plumieri and D. erecta. We saw the species during our foraging class in Gainesville Saturday. It’s been called a vine-like shrub, some varieties are spiny. The non-edible fruit is bitter. Julia Morton, the grand botany professor of the University of Miami, wrote the fruit has killed children in Queensland, Australia, and sickened a Hialeah Florida girl in May 1966. She was hospitalized in a state of confusion and drowsiness but fully recovered the next day.  An Australian government website about children’s health says “If eaten, the fruit can cause gastro-intestinal irritation, vomiting and diarrhea.” One research paper reports extracts of dried D. erecta leaves was effective at killing roundworms. The same research found Lantana leaf extract was also effective. A second study says Duranta leaf extract might be “a promising source of herbal medicine for the management of benign prostatic hyperplasia.”

Can you eat red mangroves? If you had nothing else to eat, yes. For many people Red Mangroves are just a shoreline obstruction. But they are an emergency food, a source of salt, tea, even cattle fodder. At one time, some 70 years ago, the leaves were dried, powdered, and sold as a supplement.

If you are inclined to eat them boil the seed pods (they really aren’t seed pods but for convenience let’s call these propagules seed pods.) Many folks write that they are bitter. I have not found that to be so. To me they are mealy, slightly dry and tasteless, like sandy grits perhaps, best mixed with something with a lot of flavor. I boil the pods, cool, cut them in half, scrape out the starchy inside, then boil or soak them again. A tea can be made from the leaves but it is recommended it be served with milk to bind with the high amount of tannin. Indeed, the leaves were once considered as the base material for human protein supplementation. However the high tannin content, 11.68%, made that prohibitive (in the 1950s.) We are finding quite a few seasonal forageables. In my classes we are seeing  natal plum, swinecress and Latex Strangler Vine fruit, some of which was mentioned in  recent newsletters. While we nibbled on many things among them were Turks Cap, OxalisBlack Nightshade, Violets, False Hawk’s Beard, Plantagos, Fireweed, and Hairy Bittercress which is barely hairy at all. Also noticed during the forage was a tasty False Roselle not yet done in by the cool weather. And although the Eastern Red Bud won’t flower in profusion for couple of months we found a couple of cold-daring blossoms to look at.

Plantago Power: It was a dark and rainy … morning… and I was searching through the gloom along the road for a wild mustard/radish for my foraging class. It was cold. It was rainy. It was gray. Something caught my eye so I pulled Van Go over and headed towards a watery ditch.  Then I heard a baby cry. Seriously. The figure I thought was a bag lady with stuffed shopping cart was a bundled-up woman with a baby stroller waiting for a bus. Things look different in the dim drab of winter. And the plant I thought might be a mustard most certainly was not. It was a Plantago, the largest one I have ever seen. That was worth a picture and posting on the Green Deane Forum.  There one of our regular members, Josey, who has an eye for detail and a whole lot of knowledge, offered it as Plantago Rugelii rather than P. major. One difference is the P. rugelii has purple at the base of the petiole, P. major is white. Unlike P.major, which is from Europe, P. rugelii is native to North America. It is odd that we don’t hear more about it. You can read about it here and watch a video here.   

Edible but not too tasty.

There are several “edible” Passiflora locally but only a couple worth eating in my tender-tummy opinion: P. incarnata and P. foetida. They both have a tart-sweet flavor and the entire fruit is edible, seeds, pulp and skin. I have eaten both but not in huge quantities, usually one or two at a time. A couple that are marginal are P. lutea and P. suberosa. I see P. lutea often but not P. suberosa which tends to grow further north. During a foraging class this week in Largo we saw P. lutea. Off the vine the fruit is marginal. Maybe cooked into a jelly or a juice they might improve. I am a bit concerned that I have seen some websites say P. lutea leaves can be used medicinally like P. incarnata. I would question that though I am not an herbalist nor a chemist (they would not let me take chemistry in school.)  But I seem to remember a study that tested numerous Passifloras and reported they all had some cyanide in their leaves except the P. incarnata which has GABA instead (gamma amino-butryc acid.) It was the only one, in the study at least, that did not have cyanide in its leaves and was specifically singled out. I would be careful about using any Passiflora leaves other than P. incarnata without thorough research first. Also avoid unripe fruit. One species, Passiflora adenopoda, from China,  is definitely fatal. You can read about Passifloras  here. 

Black Medic

A fairly common “What is it?” seen now is Black Medic. It’s also an iffy edible. While the seeds and greens have been eaten it is not for everyone. Also, to the every-day forager it looks a lot like Hop Clover.  Native to the area of Iran, it came to the east coast of the United States around 1807 and went west over the next 130 years. It was on the west coast of the United States in time for the Great Depression in the 1930’s. Native Americans were eating it when surveyed during the Depression thus it got listed as a Native American food. Before the species seeds the easiest way to identity Black Medic from Hop Clover is look at the center leaf of the trifolium. Black Medic’s central leaf has a longer stem than the other two leaves. In Hop Clover all three stems are the same length. Also when they seed Black Medic has black seeds, Hop Clover has brown seeds. And locally Black Medic is common whereas Hop Clover is found mostly Florida’s northwestern counties. You can read all about it here.

Blossoming, peppery watercress.

Watercress/Wintercress grew in a ditch behind an apartment complex I lived in near Sanford, Florida, some 30 years ago. How did the Eurasian native Nasturtium officinale, get there? It came to North America with the Europeans, found a good home, and stayed. Alabama later became the epicenter of cultivating it after Central Florida. The city of Sanford, by the way, is named for Henry Sanford one of Lincoln’s ambassadors. He is called “General Sanford” but the gentleman never served in the military. He got the title for donating a cannon to the Union effort. Sanford was, however, big on big farming and for a few decades made the city of Sanford the big place to go in Central Florida.

When President Calvin Coolidge came to Central Florida in 1929 it was to Sanford (and Lake Wales) he went not little-ol’ backwater Orlando. The city of Sanford had everything: River, rails, road even a college (Rollins which later moved to Winter Park.) Sanford however lacked leadership giving Orlando a chance to make its mousey mark. The watercress was in the ditch behind the apartment complex because the entire area was once truck farms and one of their main winter crops was watercress. Peppery like nasturtiums it is edible raw or cooked but make sure you get it from wholesome water. Nasturtium by the way literally means “twisted nose.” Where I collect watercress to be eaten raw is about a half mile down stream from the Wekiva River boil (its main spring and headwater.) But there’s a lot of water hemlock around so I have to pick carefully. To read more about watercress go here. To read about the deadly Water Hemlock go here.

Wild Garlic cloving.

After Watercress the second plant in profusion now is Wild Garlic. It’s putting on cloves. Wild Garlic is always a delightful find; pungent, sharp, tasty. You just know it was a welcomed spring green and flavored many an ancient meal. After a little drying I store the cloves in the frig in a paper bag. The onions go in the bin for more immediate use. You can collect them in profusion this time of year. Look for them in damp spots but not waterlogged. Wild garlic, also called wild onion, is unusual in that it puts cloves on the top of its stem, not underground on the bottom. (Onions put on a bulb, garlic puts on cloves.) This wild Allium also puts on marble-to-ping-pong ball size onions underground, about four inches down or so. It hides most of the year. Unripe Marlberries.

Marlberries and I don’t meet too often, about once or twice a year and then usually while I’m conducting a class so I don’t have the time to get acquainted better. There is also a certain lack of motivation because even at its best marlberry is not a great trailside nibble. A complicating headache is there are several Malberries of varying quality. They are also related to the invasive species Coral Berry, Ardisia crenata, which has been implicated in cattle poisoning. Reportedly found mid-Florida and south I have found Marlberries in Dreher Park in West Palm Beach, LaStrange Preserve in Ft. Pierce, and Emerson Point near Sarasota. Around the same time and in the same habitat you find Marlberries you can also see Rapanea punctata, Colicwood, one of those mystery pants one finds in wet woods. It looks like a drab cross between a mangrove and a beautyberry and used to be called Myrsine guianensis. Colicwood’s small yellow blossoms and black fruit grow directly on the branches, helping you identify it. There’s not a whole lot of literature on the species so the berries are probably not edible. As it is called “Colicwood” suggest some medicinal uses. To read more about the Marlberry and its strange relatives go here.

Bitter Aronia berries.

Another possible local species that needs more study is Aronia also called Chokeberry (note it is chokeBERRY not chokeCHERRY.) They are common in the Carolinas particularly on the Appalachian Trail where they get the 800 or so chill hours they need each winter. The berries are a powerhouse of anti-oxidants. Like Morels they shouldn’t be found in Florida as it just does not get cold enough long enough here but yet… In Gainesville, Florida, I have seen a species that might be A. melanocarpa. Here at EatTheWeeds we use I.T.E.M. and E is for environment which includes climate and Florida is the wrong environment for the species. However, if you plant Aronias they will grow here and apparently fruit. It has been reported in Hawthorne Fl. which is 20-some miles down the road from Gainesville. In this case they are growing with a profusion of Deerberries near the Hawthorn Trail which are blossoming now and were mentioned in this newsletter. Perhaps the Aronia was intentionally planted many years ago.

Foraging classes, at least for this week, are on hold. Private classes are ongoing but I need to find what public areas are still open. The closings are not consistent. Sanlando Park in Seminole County is open but all the city parks in nearby Altamonte Springs are closed. Some federal land is ope, some closed. We will get back to normal.

 The American Nighshade is a much-maligned plant. Whether discussing its name, Solanum americanum, or edibility there can be confusion. The flavor of American Nighshade berries ranges from mild to slightly sweet, non-descript to pleasant, not bitter. It’s fairly easy to identify: The toxic unripe berries are green, shiny, mottled and flecked with white. They cluster at one point on the end of the peduncle (stem.) Then they turn deep purple, shiny and edible. Also you can find blossoms with petals that fold down and backwards rather than upward and around the middle. But you have to be careful. Not far from the pictured fruit I found another nightshade, similar looking. The unripe berries were clustered at the end of the peduncle but they were not shiny, mottled or flecked with white. They were a dull green. And the ripe berries were larger than usual and a dull black. Their taste was bitter. I think I run into a wayward species occasionally, from Deland to Ocala. The dull look to the berries and their larger than usual size are a good tip off and of course when ripe they taste bitter. One possibility is Solanum chenopodioides but I’m not certain of that. Chamberbitter, Phyllanthus urinaria.

I don’t write about herbal uses because I am not qualified to do so. As I say in my classes that’s beyond my pay grade. My expertise is edible plants and I also know a lot of herbalists who would take me to task if I proffered too much advice about herbals. Still, one can’t ignore them either. In my classes if I know an herbal application I mention it but I also advise folks to check with their local herbalist.  That said one common herb I see is Chamberbitter, or Stonebreaker, Phyllanthus urinaria. There are about a dozen and a half Phyllanthus in Florida. Fortunately the one we want is fairly easy to identify. The seeds line up on  the underside. The species has been used a long time for urinary issues including kidney stones. But recent research suggests it can have far more applications. According to a 2018 journal article “… investigations reveal that the plant is a rich source of lignans, tannins, flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, and other secondary metabolites. Pharmacological activities include anticancer, hepatoprotective, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, and cardioprotective effects.”

It’s rather obvious that wintertime foraging varies where you live. In moderate Florida we can forage all year and the wintertime provides some of the best opportunities. But what of northern climates?

I grew up where winter night temperatures easily dropped into the 30-plus below zero (-38 celsius.) Sometimes the schools had to close for several days because they could not be kept warm. And once we went skating at 50 below just to say we did. (Chilblains from that night some 60 years ago still bother me in air conditioned buildings. It’s wasn’t the skating with a bonfire that did permanent damage but rather the arctic one-mile walk home.) That was on Gowen’s Pond, our local natural skating rink. It had one tree-stump island, probably had been a water-tolerant hackmatack. That speck of protrusion through the ice was perhaps six square feet in total area. The ice was thinner there and one winter I saw a turtle under the ice feeding some some green pond plant. That generated several thoughts. One was that it was warm enough for the turtle to go looking for food. Two that the turtle found food, and, three that the turtle was food even in the winter.  Like the turtle or the horses I grew up with you can find food in hostile winter climates if you know where to dig or browse. Chickweed stole the show this weekend. In well-watered spots chickweed was in green glory, lush, full, blossoming, happy to be alive. With such healthy plants it was easy to find the identifying characteristics: stretchy inner core, a single line of hair on the main stem that switches 90 degrees at the nodes, a five-petal blossom that looks like 10 petals, and uncooked chickweed tastes like raw corn. Also sprouting patches of green on the monoculture brown park were stinging nettles. It’s still early in the season for nettles with most of them no higher than four inches, just about the same height as our winter henbit also available for the picking. A private forage later on produced, surprisingly, some native mint and a lot of true thistles. Lot’s of food and flavor there. There were also ticks-a-plenty.

The spate of warm weather recently increased our wanderings. Here are some of the bounty we found in foraging classes:   natal plum, swinecress (which we later found there) some and a couple of Milkweed Vine fruit. While we nibbled on many things among them were Turks Cap, OxalisBlack Nightshade (see below), Violets, False Hawk’s Beard, Plantagos, Fireweed, and Hairy Bittercress which is barely hairy at all. Also noticed during the forage was a tasty False Roselle not yet done in by the cool weather. And although the Eastern Red Bud won’t flower in profusion for couple of months we found a couple of winter-daring blossoms to look at.

Use sublimed sulfur to thwart tick attacks.

Before the state of Florida went on the Internet most of the information it thought fit for its citizens to know was produced in pamphlet form. When the shift was made to the Internet some information got lost or was dropped. One useful bit of advice was using sublimed sulfur to keep ticks off.  Available online or through local pharmacies or chemical supply stores you put it in an old sock or the like and dust your cuffs and collar with it before entering tick habitat. It either repels them or vastly slows them down from finding a place to grab on, giving you more time to find the hardy ones (to reduces chances of disease you should remove them within 24-hours. After that the chances of disease goes up exponentially with each passing hour.) I used sublimed for many years very successfully finding a tick or two on me now and then but not attached. That’s the good news. Now the bad news, for me at least. While I am not a biochemist I would suspect this would not be something you would do if you had a sulfur allergy. Indeed, after I used it for many years I developed an allergy to it (severe nasal congestion and eye watering.) So be careful. That’s said it did work well while I used it. 

Weeds of Southern Turf Grasses

If you didn’t find a weed book you wanted under the Christmas tree here’s one you can pick up locally or order. The University of Florida has put out an unintentional edible weed book, Weeds of Southern Turfgrasses. What I mean is the book is not designed for foragers but rather land managers. However, the majority of the plants in the book are edible. It has 437 color photographs of 193 weed species found in the south usually on lawns and the like. As you can see by the link I have a list of the edibles and what pages they are on. Many of my students just print the list then paste each entry on the appropriate page or make notes on that page. There is also a link on the page to order it through the state of Florida. DO NOT ORDER IT THROUGH AMAZON OR OTHER BOOKSELLERS. Why? Because they will charge you from $38.67 to $59.66 for a book you can buy at a local extension office for $8. If you order it through the link I provide it is $14 plus shipping. (I actually found one bookseller in the past asking over $800 for it.) As it says on the link I do not get any money for recommending this book. It is just an inexpensive, handy book to have.

I had a friend who thought of himself as an outdoorsman thus beyond needing to study edible plants. Many years ago he called me one day asking “how do I get the seeds out of the pigweed berries.”  I knew there was a problem immediately. Our local “pigweed” does not have berries but our local nightshade does. Our “pigweed” is an Amaranth and has seed spikes. About the size of fingers or more they are covered with tiny flowers that produce a multitude eye-of-the needle seeds, tan to black.  No berries involved at all. Conversely the nightshade (Solanum americanum) produces an umbrella-like spread of black shiny berries on one small stalk (photo to left.) It does have a lot of seeds inside the berries. So I thought I had better ask him why he wanted the seeds before I told him him the Amaranth didn’t have berries but the nightshade did. He wanted to grow some in his yard. They had been steaming the leaves and eating them like spinach! When I got done explaining he said “then that’s why we’ve all been getting headaches after eating the leaves.” Indeed. The leaves of this particular nightshade are edible but they must be boiled in one or two changes of water, not steamed.

My friend had skipped many details. The wrong identification also led to the wrong preparation compounding the error. Admittedly the plants did have a few things in common. They were both green, grew in Florida and had leaves that can vaguely be the same rough shape, diamondish. But the difference between a seed spike of small green flowers vs. a cluster of shiny black berries is not paying attention to details. Fortunately no great harm was done. No matter how much Details are important (even though it is my personality to dislike them.) Locally two plants you will commonly encounter that you need to know about are the edible elderberry and the deadly water hemlock. To the beginner they can look similar. Most local edible mushrooms are in winter recess. Our Ringless Honey Mushroom season ended several weeks ago. Most of our terrestrial species will stay hidden until heavy spring rains. However during a foraging class this weekend we did see some Amanitas, of which there is no shortage of in the southeast. It was three examples of the same species, A. citrina. But the big find but not a winter surprise was were logs of Oyster Mushrooms, of the Pleurotus ostreatus complex. They say “complex” because the mushrooms can vary enough for mycologists to notice but not enough to be called a different species.  I’ve seen them on Oaks in the winter as well as Sweet Bays and Sycamores. In warmer weather I see a related smaller species on palms.  Oyster Mushrooms — which do not taste like oysters but can smell like anise — are considered one of the safer mushrooms to harvest because none of the possible look-a-likes are deadly… just sickening. If you were starving and came upon a patch of cattails you would have great cause for celebration. You have found food, and water. You will survive. But if you are not starving and do not have all the time in the inter-connected world you just might find cattails highly overrated.

It is true that no plant can produce more starch per acre than cattails, about 3.5 tons under cultivation. And it can produce a lot of starch economically if you can mechanize the extraction. But hand extraction is time consuming and labor intensive. It is also wet, smelly work all of which can be worsened significantly by harvesting in cold weather. So yes, cattails are food but the time demand is such that harvesting food has to be your prime occupation.

A similar argument can be made for kudzu. The roots do have edible starch but it takes a gargantuan amount of work to get the starch out, literally hours of steady pounding. It is not a calorie positive activity. It moves you closer to starvation. But, mechanize the process with some hammers run by falling water — or hammers run by a horse fed on an endless supply of grass — and it becomes a reliable calorie-positive food.

Just how good are these wild “staples” came up in a foraging class this weekend when it was asked why did the Native Americans eat acorns when they need so much processing? There can be several answers. One is the natives had no choice and they had a lot of time to process acorns. It was their 9-to-5 job, so to speak. Another is acorns are nutrient dense and have fat which is not only nice but essential to have if you can’t run down a buffalo. A third answer is variety. The menu only changed with the season so variety was important. One could also add that acorns, if cared for, store well for a few years making a food bank one could rely on.

All these foods if approached efficiently are calorie positive. But,they take time and calories to make edible. Another variable is whether the food is for one on the run or for a group in a settled situation. It makes a difference. Personally I look for shortcuts. I roast the cattail root reducing the labor and time needed significantly. I look for Live Oaks (white oaks) that have acorns with minimal tannin thus requiring less work. And I reduce that work by crushing the nutmeat in an oil expeller first. This extracts the oil and mashes up the acorns so they leach faster and more completely. Having a nutsheller to shell them also reduces hours of work down to minutes. As for kudzu I look for little roots the size of my fingers, or I feed the leaves to goats and let them turn it into something easier to work with, such as milk.

Some wild food requires little work some a lot. Much of what comprises success with wild foods is knowing the difference and the most efficient way to harvest a particular food. Still interested? Here’s an article on “wild’ flours.

While seasonal changes are not as dramatic in warmer climates we definitely do have them regarding plants. Pellitory is all but gone for the season. We shouldn’t smell its cucumber-like aroma again until Thanksgiving or so.  Sow Thistles are reaching the end of their season as well. Most are past the stage of eating. On the gangbuster side are Blackberries and Creeping Cucumbers.  Blackberries will be done soon but the mouse cucumbers will keep on producing until a fall frost, freeze or the really short days of the winter solstice. Dare I also mention we are getting a huge crop of Black Nightshade berries, Solanum americanum. I have yet to make a pie out of them — I really don’t like to bake — but I eat the berries all the time as a trailside nibble. Just make absolutely sure they are ripe. And in reference to ripe our Lantana berries are starting to ripen but are toxic when green. You want them dark, metalic blue.

Meet at the Sand Lake parking lot (road on left after entrance. Go to end of road.) Unlike city parks or the urban area, Wekiva Park is “wild” Florida. There are very few weeds of urbanization. The edibles are mostly native plants and far between. There is a lot of walking in this class.

This is also father’s day so perhaps you can go fishing or swimming after class. High tide is at noon that day at the park. Also that evening at 7:15 pm. there is a “shoot the full moon” event at the park. It is to watch the full moo16n rise between the Sunshine Skyway Spans.

Gopher apples don’t travel well. In fact, Gopher apples don’t look well, either. About the size and shape of a large olive they are pink, pasty, soft and best eaten right off the bush. Don’t put them in your pocket! Gopher Apples are blossoming abundantly. Their season can fluctuate a lot. It’s not unusual in most years to find edible Gopher Apple by this time of year. And while Gopher Apples are usually low-growing, less than a foot tall, I have seen them a yard high. They often look like young oaks. You can read more about Gopher Apples here.

Tallow Plums are something of a botanical mystery. Are they semi-parasitic? Stand alone? Are many specimens in one area several separate plants or really just one specimen growing out of the ground in several places? And what of the name? Tallow Plum? Hog Plum? There are so many “hog” plums we might as well stay with Tallow Plum. When bright yellow ripe the plums are tangy, a bit tart and a bit sweet, chalky when unripe. The only other wild plant with yellow fruit that size — excluding escaped citrus — are Horse Nettles (Solanum carolinense.) They are herbaceous not woody and have huge spiny leaves. For many years I found Tallow Plums only along the coasts. Then after decades of looking I found one in Orange County, 20 miles west of Orlando. This past weekend we saw several blossoming and fruiting at a new foraging class location, Ft. Meade, Fl. which is in the middle of the state. Tallow Plums like sandy, dry places. At Ft. Doing well this time of year is Wild Garlic. You could also call it Wild Onion but its aroma is definitely garlic. Our Wild Garlic is odd in that it puts an onion-like bulb on the bottom of the plant (usually three or four inches in the ground) and puts cloves of garlic on the very top of the plant… and the part in between is edible as well. This garlic is seasonal and can be found for a couple of months if you take its entire cycle into consideration.  April is usually its peak time. I have found it in many places from Orlando to Largo to Gainesville (where it is very common.) They like wet spots like ditches. One can also store the cloves in a paper bag in the refrigerator for months. You can read about Wild Garlic here.

While the temperatures have been slightly on the cool side at night it’s been warm enough for plants in the day to know it’s spring and they are happy! April is a transition month. Many of winter edibles are ending their season while spring and summer plants are starting. There is overlap and that can vary depending which end of the state you are on. Blueberries and their kin won’t ripen for a while but they are setting among them Vaccinium arboreum. It’s commonly called Sparkleberry and Farkleberry and mistakenly Tree Huckleberry but it is not a huckleberry. It is the only blueberry locally that gets to tree size. Sparleberry has a flaking outer bark that reveals a reddish brown smooth inner bark. Also look for Deerberry, Vaccinium staminuem. That species is easy to identify because the blossoms have long stamens and the underside of the leaf is white. Incidentally, blueberries can have any number of seeds in them. Huckleberries, however, always have exactly 10 seeds. There can be bits of grit in a huckelberry but only 10 seeds. The leaves also have bright gold glands. You can read about blueberries here, Huckleberries here. Also in our Gainesville foraging class this coming Sunday we might also see a fruiting Aronia melanocarpa, the Black Chokeberry.

A couple of hundred miles can make a botanical difference. In Ft. Meade we saw a Toothache tree, Zanthoxylum clava-herculis, setting fruit. We’ll see the same species in Gainesville this weekend but probably just blossoming. Also called Hercule’s Club, the thorns, bark and leaves have been used at least for centuries to numb aching teeth. It will also make you drool, a small inconvenience to silence an aching tooth. You can read about it here. Many Americans have actually eaten part of a relative of the Toothache Tree, Szechuan Pepper, Zanthoxylum simulans (and Z. bungeanum.)  That spice is made from the seeds hulls of the species. We can use the seed hulls of our tree for spice as well. The tree is covered with thorns so approach with care. Don’t mistake it for skinny, thorny shrub often seen in the same area as the Toothache Tree, Aralia spinosa, which is not related but is sometimes also called Hercules Club.

Also blossoming this time of year is the distinctive Eastern Coral Bean, sometimes called the Cherokee Bean. What is odd about this plant is the edible flowers produce toxic beans.  So we do not eat the red and black beans. A few of the red blossoms are edible raw but they are usually boiled then mixed with other foods notably scrambled eggs. When you cook the blossoms they turn light green. The distinctive shape of the leaves makes the shrub easy to identify. Young leaves are edible cooked but are marginal fare. Like Pawpaws they prefer dry, sunny places. This week we also ate some fruit of the controversial American Black Nightshade, Solanum americanum.  Several plants in the Nightshade family have one foot in edible and the other in toxic. The same is true with Honeysuckle and Pea family. I eat S. americanum berries as a trail side nibble often to the aghast of students or even other foragers. It’s a family with a lot of misunderstanding but also justified warnings about toxicity. If I have a problem with the S. americanum it is that the fruit is not consistent. Sometimes you find some very ripe but bitter fruit. Don’t eat those. Sometimes that are also larger than usual fruit and bitter. Perhaps there is some cross pollinating going on. Always taste a ripe berry first and wait a minute or two to see if any bitterness shows up. The green berries are definitely toxic. To read more about the American Nightshade go here.

When will we be seeing mushrooms again? The answer is probably after spring rains in this month or early May. One can find various edible and medicinal mushrooms all year here but April or May to November or December is prime time depending upon weather. I harvested twelve pounds of chanterelles last year, half as many Milk Caps and some 80 pounds of Ringless Honey Mushroom (still eating the dried ones.) The topic of mushroom came up in the foraging class this week as we saw a Ganoderma curtisii starting its seasonal growth.

Also known as the medicinal  mushroom Reishi, we have several species locally which is a bit of contention. The debate is how many species are there, what are they called, and are they as good as the ones that are sold for medicinal use? As for the latter my herbalist friends say yes, they are as good as the commercial kinds. As for how many and what they are called that probably won’t be settled for decades. I see about four regularly, it’s hard to tell. With certainty I see G. curtisii, G. sessile, G. lobatum, and G. zonatum. G. curtisii grows like a short golf club and is the closest relative to G. lingzhi, which is the well-known Chinese Reishi.  G. sessile has no stem and grows horizontally (a smaller form is G. sessiliforme.)  G. zonatum, more yellow than the rest, is found exclusively on palms and will kill the palm. If your palm has G. zontaum on it there is no hope for it.  G. lobatum resembles G. applanatum and I always see it on oak stumps. There is also a Ganoderma that grows on citrus roots, G. tuberculosum but I have for certain seen it only once. To my knowledge none of the Reishis are toxic — but stick to identified species — and local herbalists report good results with them. These mushrooms stimulate the immune system by providing various molecular “keys’ that unlock and turn on immune cells in the gut. Our Yucca blossoms need to be cooked. Photo by Green Deane

Yucca is not Yuca. Or said another way: YOU-ka is not YUK-ka. The latter, Yuca with on ‘C’, is a root that is edible after some processing. Yucca — with two ‘C’s’ has roots that are not edible. They are bitter, soapy, and used to stun fish. So what do we eat on the Yucca? The flowers, the flower stem when young, and some folks can stomach the seeds. The plant is also deer proof. 

Also called Spanish Bayonet, Needle Palm, Bear Grass, and Adam’s Needle, it is actually a broadleaf, evergreen shrub. It was originally a southern species but now can be found as far north as southern New England. Interestingly Yucca is not found in south Florida or the Keys. Unlike many other Yucca species its edible uses are limited. Other species, with far less bitter saponins, have edible fruit which lends itself to many uses. What it lacks in edibility the Yucca filimentosa mades up for in producing fiber.  It is blossoming now. A good place to look is drier pastures and clearings in upland woods. Matchhead also called Frog Fruit

Some plants barely make it into the realm of edible.  For example it if it not toxic, does not taste bad, and grows in profusion it’s probably an edible. However, as forager emeritus Dick Deuerling used to say, “I only eat the good stuff.” Whether Frog Fruit, also known as Match Head, is “good stuff” is debatable. You can boil the leaves to eat , dry them for tea, or in a pinch smoke them most likely to keep bugs from finding you. Most often you will find Match Head/Frog Fruit in lower, wetter spots of a lawn. While it is not a great wild edible one of it’s relative,  Lippia alba aka Oaxaca Lemon Verbena, is. I have it growing in my dry back yard. All of that reminds me of a “nudiflora” that also barely makes it into the edible realm, Murdannia nudiflora, or Doveweed. It’s related to the Commelina family and likes damp spots like the Match Head. To read about Doveweed go here.

Both Palm Beach (thus West Palm Beach) and Dreher Park have an interesting history. Palm Beach got its name from an argument over insurance followed by one big party. You can read about it here. Dreher Park’s creation was covered in this newsletter last year. The park has many unusual species because  (Paul) Dreher wasn’t given a budget to make the land into a park. He took donations and even raided landscaping trash heap. Thus it has an eclectic mixture of species. One tree it has is a Ficus racemosa, the Cluster Fig. (What I don’t know is whether this species has varieties and different colored figs.) The tree produces figs on special shoots from the trunk and main branches. The fruit is edible raw or cooked but does not have much of a flavor — nor do Banyan figs. Often the fruit is striped when totally ripe. Young leaves are  cooked as well, shoots are cooked or eaten raw. Interestingly, a relative, the Rubber Tree, has edible tips and fruit. Here, there, everywhere, you can find American Nightshade ripe with fruit. It likes sunny places but don’t rule out spots under trees that also get enough passing sun. Overly wet areas are not good. One often finds them along with Bidens alba, also known as Spanish Needles. From a pile of dirt in West Palm Beach to a bike trail north of Orlando we found plenty of ripe American Nighshades this weekend to snack on (often, oddly, peering out from under a monsoon umbrella.)  Yes, the green, unripe berries are toxic, they can make you sick if you eat many unripe berries, less for children who are more often poisoned than adults. They don’t know green berries taste bad and they eat a lot of then. Symptoms occur within 30 minutes and pumping out the stomach usually leads to recovery. That said, fatal poisoning are rare with the only death reported as far back as 1866. So don’t eat unripe green berries. Don’t eat berries that are partially green or purple. Total purple on the outside is what you want.  To read more about the American Nightshade go here.

Saturday’s class was cancelled not because of rain — it was a fine day — but because of flooding in the back of LaStrange Preserve. They county said if we parked outside the park the police might haul our cars away.

Tsuga canadensis. We just called it a fir tree.

The fir tree called the Easter Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) has edible parts. It was also what we used for a Christmas Tree every year. I’d take an ax and head out into the 120 acre chunk of forest behind the house and find a suitable one. And it is called “eastern” for a reason: You won’t find it west of mid-continent. On the edible side young needles are used to make a tea and the inner bark is edible as well. The tree is also quite threatened and down to 1% presence in some places compared to when Europeans first arrived to the New World. One reasons is many areas of the country are overpopulated by deer and their urine is threatening the tree’s future. Deer like to nibble on the Eastern Hemlock. They know a good thing when they taste it. Their urine, however, is high in nitrogen and hemlocks like low nitrogen soil plus they are slow growing. Trees such as the sugar maple, however, like high-nitrogen soil so they are moving in and outgrowing hemlocks. (Don’t confuse the tree called the hemlock with a green herbaceous plant call the hemlock, which is deadly.) And while permaculture is a related speciality and not my area of competency it might be nice to have a cute deer or two in the back yard to recycle “garden waste” and make nitrogen…
